Description
The Purple Tiger Passion Flower boasts sweetly fragrant, almost gaudy 6” flowers with red petals and purple striped filaments. It is a coarse textured vine with very attractive lime green leaves. For southern gardeners, this is an amazing plant to grow. It is a very large heat loving plant that will reward you if given space to spread out. We find that it does not grow as rapidly as many Passiflora do, but that it will obtain an impressive size with time.
Purple Tiger will grow and bloom happily in a large pot, and responds well to pruning. Unfortunately, while the impressive flowers are worth the wait, this vine can be slow to bloom, particularly for northern gardeners. It may not bloom the first year if the vine does not get big enough. Once it does start flowering though it blooms consistently.
Full sun is a must for this plant. It likes conditions as warm and sunny as possible, and won’t bloom if its cold or shaded. Additionally as it is a true tropical plant, you should bring it indoors before it starts getting cold in the fall. You should also limit watering in cool winter conditions when the vine is not actively growing as we find it to be more prone to getting root rot over the winter.
For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.
For those interested, Passiflora ‘Purple Tiger’ is P. phoenicea x P. quadrangularis. Patrick Worley and Rick McCain’s hybrid.
Hardiness Zone: 10
What does hardiness zone 10 mean?
It means that this Passiflora is not cold tolerant and requires protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, then bring it inside once temperatures start regularly dipping below 50 degrees. Freezing temperatures will kill it.
