Frequently asked questions.
Are your products organic?
No, we are not currently certified organic. Because we container grow all our plants for shipping, we currently use traditional liquid and slow release fertilizers on our products. However, at the current time, we only use pesticides labeled for organic use on our Passion Flowers. We spray Neem Oil in our greenhouses regularly to control spider mites. This is the safest, most effective, environmentally friendly method we have found to work. Neem Oil is considered non-toxic to birds, mammals, plants, and bees, and has low residual activity.
I want to grow for butterflies/pollinators, do you use pesticides?
We currently use Neem Oil only on our Passion Flowers. We do not spray any other pesticides.
Neem Oil is not considered to be toxic to bees or other pollinators as it must be ingested by the target organism (they have to eat the sprayed leaves) for it to have any effect. This feature makes it safe for pollinators, but harmful to insect pests.
Neem Oil can harm butterfly larvae if it was recently sprayed on the plants. However, it has low residual activity and should no longer be present in harmful levels after than plant has been rained on. Because butterfly larvae can defoliate young plants (which will likely kill the plant), we recommend protecting them from caterpillars feeding on them for a couple weeks to allow the plants to establish some roots and to produce new growth. By then any residual Neem Oil residue should no longer be harmful to the feeding larvae.

I want to grow Passion Fruit, how do I do that?
Firstly, you will need to make sure that you select a fruiting variety. Many Passion Flowers are sterile hybrids grown for their flowers. Other varieties such as Bahama Blue, Silvie, Blue Bouquet produce small, inedible fruits. If you like the appearance of their blossoms and want fruit, these varieties can often be used as pollen donors to get edible fruit on other varieties.
Secondly, while some Passion Flowers will set fruit without a pollinator, most will not. Those that will set fruit without a pollinator will set fruit better with one. Thus we recommend planting 2 varieties for the best chances of getting fruit.
Lastly, because Passion Flowers are a tropical plant, those not living in warm places like California, Texas and Florida might have trouble getting fruit to set and ripen before fall frost. If you live in a cooler climate you should plan to bring your plants inside to a greenhouse or very sunny area to allow the fruit time to ripen.
You should also consider trying to grow a variety like incarnata or Blue Eyed Susan instead. While these plants do not produce the same juicy fragrant fruit that the tropical varieties make, they will much more reliably produce fruit in colder climates.
