Description
Passiflora ‘Betty Myles Young’ is a hybrid that sports enormous blueish-purple flowers in abundance from spring to frost. This is a large, free-flowering, undemanding vine with attractive, dark, glossy leaves and purplish stems. Due to its size and vigor this vine is ideally planted in the ground somewhere it has space to spread. However, if you live in a cold climate and provide it with a large container it will perform just as well for you as if it was planted in the ground. Plus it is sterile which means that it won’t make a mess dropping fruit if you keep it in a pot on your patio.
This variety does sucker, but doesn’t do so excessively in our experience. It seems to mainly do so if it gets frozen and is re-sprouting from its roots. On the topic of re-sprouting from getting frozen, in our experience, this vine is not as cold hardy as most sources indicate. In our zone 8 garden, we have had it come back only 1 time after a mild winter.
For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.
For those interested, Passiflora ‘Betty Myles Young’ is P. ‘Clear Sky’ x P. loefgrenii ‘Iporanga’. Myles Stewart Irvine’s hybrid.
Hardiness Zone: 9
What does hardiness zone 9 mean?
It means that this Passiflora is not cold tolerant and requires protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, bring it inside once it starts to freeze. This variety will tolerate temperatures down to freezing. Prolonged cold temperatures will kill it.
