Description

This fabulous plant is Passiflora miniata, sometimes known as the Scarlet Passion flower. It is one of the brightest, deepest red passion flowers you can get. The rich red petals are set off by short black filaments, and the red bract covered buds are even ornamental.

Most Passiflora have smooth, lobed leaves, but this plant has lance shaped fuzzy leaves. Hanging below the leaves you might spot round speckled fruits if the flowers get pollinated.  The fruits look similar to miniature melons.  These fruits are edible when ripe.

While many Passion Flowers take a break from blooming in the winter. Not so with miniata! It is covered with rich red blooms fall to spring.  If you need something bright to liven up your winter garden or greenhouse this might just be the perfect plant for you!  Most of its blooming occurs during the winter and spring, but it does bloom sporadically in the summer as well.

We find that this vine does well grown in a container.  It grows at a moderate pace, and stays compact and manageable without much effort.  For folks in more tropical areas, this can be a large vine that grows rapidly. It can sucker from the roots and spread.

Unless you live in a very hot location, you should plant this vine in full sun. It will still flower in some light shade. To prevent leaf scorch, light shade may be preferred in very hot climates.

Formerly known and sold as Passiflora coccinea.

For each item added to cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

Hardiness zone: 10

What does hardiness zone 10 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is not cold tolerant and requires protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, bring it inside once temperatures start regularly dipping below 50 degrees. Freezing temperatures will kill it.
