This vine has many other valuable features, not the least of which is how easy it is to grow. This attribute makes it a great choice for a first passion flower. Other pros to this plant include that it will bloom spring to fall, and even in the winter if given enough light and warmth. It is unfazed by summer heat or cool autumn weather. Plus it is a smaller vine which makes it an excellent choice for growing in containers.  This makes it accessible to gardeners in colder climates. Lastly, unlike many Passiflora which can be difficult to overwinter without a greenhouse, this vine will overwinter inside in a sunny window without fuss.

Like most Passion Flowers, this vine will perform best if planted in full sun, though it will tolerate some shade without much reduction in blooms.

For those interested, Passiflora ‘Belotii’ is P. alata x P. caerulea. It is an old hybrid produced in the 1800’s. Alternate spellings commonly seen include belottii, and belotti.

Purple Tiger will grow and bloom happily in a large pot, and responds well to pruning. Unfortunately, while the impressive flowers are worth the wait, this vine can be slow to bloom, particularly for northern gardeners. It may not bloom the first year if the vine does not get big enough. Once it does start flowering though it blooms consistently.

Full sun is a must for this plant.  It likes conditions as warm and sunny as possible, and won’t bloom if its cold or shaded.  Additionally as it is a true tropical plant, you should bring it indoors before it starts getting cold in the fall. You should also limit watering in cool winter conditions when the vine is not actively growing as we find it to be more prone to getting root rot over the winter.
