Abutilon ‘Red Tiger’

Red Tiger has some of the most mesmerizing flowers we have seen. This Abutilon has large yellow blooms with rich red veins hanging on long pedicels. This allows the blooms to move freely, and they will sway in the breeze like a bunch of delicate lanterns. The blossoms provide a spectacular experience whether viewed from the side or below making it a truly remarkable plant to add to your garden. Red Tiger is capable of blossoming almost year round if kept in the right environment.

Unlike many of the Abutilons we grow, Red tiger is NOT a dwarf variety. It is capable of getting 4-5′ or more tall and wide. However, like most Abutilons it responds well to pruning and can be kept to a smaller size quite easily.

Abutilon is an evergreen perennial in warm climates, and can be easily grown as an outdoor annual or a houseplant in colder climates. This particular Abutilon is very heat tolerant, and it can also survive temperatures down into the 20’s, but it is best to keep it above freezing. It isn’t picky about its environment as long as it receives plenty of water and bright light. It is suited for both container culture or planting in the ground, and will happily bloom on your windowsill or outside on your patio. Abutilons respond well to pruning. Flower buds are produced on new growth, so they can be easily be shaped and maintained to size with regular trimming

Because of its leaf and flower shape, Abutilon is known by many different names, they include flowering maple, parlor maple, Indian mallow, Chinese bellflower, and Chinese Lantern.

You will receive 1 Abutilon starter plant in 2.5″ pot for each item added to the cart. An example of starter plants is included in the photos. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

It means that Abutilon are not cold tolerant and require protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing them outdoors, bring them inside before it starts frosting. While they will tolerate a light frost, continual cold temperatures will kill them.

Abutilon ‘Little Sunshine’

Little Sunshine is the most dwarf, compact Abutilon we grow. This Abutilon comes with petite leaves and an unbelievable number of small, lemon-yellow flowers. It almost flowers too much if that’s even possible producing practically as many blossoms as leaves. We have never seen this plant without flowers on it. There is nothing more uplifting than looking at this plant loaded with vibrant yellow flowers on a dreary winter day. Because this plant is so busy producing flower buds, it stays very, very small. Almost all of its resources are devoted to flower production. It will be happy to stay a manageable size on your windowsill indefinitely. So far we have not had it exceed a foot tall making it the perfect addition to an indoor garden.

We will try to send you a good selection of colors.

If you have a preference for a characteristic, such as cold hardy, butterfly friendly, no red flowers, not incarnata, etc. please let us know in the comments section with your order and we will try to accommodate your preferences, however please remember, variety selection is completely up to us and based on what we currently have available. Included Variety Descriptions:

Citrina:

Dainty 1.5″ sunny yellow blooms sit atop velvety leaves. The numerous yellow blossoms really stand out against the rich green foliage making this a striking specimen. Despite having smaller blooms than many Passion Flowers, the sheer number of blossoms more than makes up for it. This is an extremely free flowering plant in an unusual color that is great for beginners as it is very easy to grow.

Aside from its unusual color, it’s small size is another endearing feature. This vine is best suited to growing in a container, and due to its miniature size, it is very easy to manage. It makes a good house plant for a sunny window, and will reward you with flowers year round.

To keep the blooms coming you should provide this vine with plenty of light and moisture. Grow it in a sunny spot outdoors, or in the sunniest window you have.

Adularia:

Dainty, pastel pink blossoms cover this free flowering plant year round. Adularia’s blooms are smaller and less showy than many Passiflora blossoms, but it more than makes up for it with sheer numbers. In fact, this vine is almost never without buds! It is a very easy to grow plant that maintains a small size and compact growth habit. Additionally, its leaves are accented with beautiful variegation.

For those who live in a frost free climate, this vine can be grown in the ground. Using it in a container is where it really shines though. Adularia is ideally suited to being container grown and works well as a house plant, or in a hanging basket.

You should provide this vine with plenty of light and moisture to keep it flowering. Grow it in a sunny spot outdoors, or in your sunniest window. If you are growing it indoors, it would benefit from temporarily moving outside to a sheltered spot in the warm summer months.

Despite having smaller blooms than many Passion Flowers, the sheer number of blossoms more than makes up for it. This is an extremely free flowering plant in an unusual color that is great for beginners as it is very easy to grow. Plus if you want to grow two varieties together to get some extra color, this vine is the perfect growing partner for Passiflora ‘Adularia‘.

It is hummingbird pollinated, and much loved by pollinators and fritillary caterpillars.

Passiflora holosericea

This unusual Passiflora is one of the few yellowish varieties available. Clusters of up to 8 dainty, white petaled blooms with yellowish-orange filaments and a maroon center accent its soft, velvety leaves. These large, unique leaves give Passiflora holosericea the common name of Velvet Leaf Passion Flower.

Passiflora Holosericea is a large vine capable of growing quite rapidly in warm temperatures. So, if you are going to appreciate its true beauty, then give it space to spread out. Provided that you give it space, sun and warmth, you will be rewarded by a solid wall of attractive leaves topped with dozens of bright blossoms. It grows equally well in a pot as in the ground, but should still be given ample trellis space if container grown.

This vine is heat tolerant and blooms best in full sun and hot weather. It may not bloom well if not kept warm enough.
