Passiflora Cold Hardy Fruiting Bundle

Looking to grow a cold hardy passion flower for fruit? This bargain bundle is great choice for those in colder climates. It includes 2 different Passiflora incarnata cultivars. Passiflora incarnata is the most cold hardy Passion Flower variety we grow. It grows and flowers profusely even in colder climates adding a touch of exotic flare to any garden. In fact, it will even produce edible fruit in northern climates. Best of all, it is a native plant that is pollinator and wildlife friendly. You will likely find, that this vine is a magnet for both pollinators and fritillary butterfly larvae.

Incarnata vines are easy to grow, and bloom generously throughout the summer. Incarnata will produce copious quantities of small tasty fruit if pollinated. However, Passion Flowers do not generally self-pollinate. This bundle contains two genetically different plant which ensures that you will be able to get fruit. The starter plants in this bundle include 1 Passiflora incarnata, and 1 Passiflora incarnata ‘Alba’.

When it gets frozen in the fall, it dies back to the ground and reappears in May resulting in its common name ‘maypop’. Also, it will sucker from the roots and spread sending up new stems where the roots have run to. You can control its spread by simply pulling or cutting down the unwanted sprouts.

You should plant it in full sun and provide it with plenty of water during the growing season to get the most flowers. However, to successfully overwinter this vine, it will need to be located in a well drained spot.

If you are growing it outdoors, it can survive temperatures down to about 0 degrees as long as it is in a well drained spot. The top will be killed to the ground, but it should re-sprout from the roots. Additionally, in colder areas, it would benefit from a protective winter mulch. If grown in a container, it will need to have the roots protected from freezing temperatures.

Passiflora loefgrenii x caerulea

Passiflora loefgrenii x caerulea will smother your wall or trellis with large, bright purple flowers all season long. This is a very large vigorous vine that needs a lot of space to look its best. Given the opportunity, this large vine will gladly cover a wall or a fence in a season. It has attractive deep green foliage even when it is not blooming. We find the flowers to look almost identical to Passiflora ‘Lavender Lady’. While Lavender Lady is a smaller, more well behaved vine, loefgrenii x caerulea has the advantage when it comes to blooming in the summer heat. This vine will continue to pump out those gorgeous purple flowers continuously through the hot humid summer. However, sometimes the flowers wilt in the mid summer heat.

Like its parent Passiflora caerulea, this vine produces a lot of small, inedible fruits. The fruits are fairly firmly held on the vine and are not particularly messy. Loefgrenii x caerulea is fairly cold tolerant and will survive some frost, however it would appreciate protection from freezing temperatures, and prolonged freezing temperatures will kill it.

In most places you should plant this vine in full sun. However, in very hot climates it would prefer to have some light afternoon shade which will likely help it to keep the blossoms from wilting in the heat.

Passiflora sidifolia

Passiflora sidifolia is a species from Brazil that has medium sized pendulous flowers with white petals and reddish-purple striped filaments. These fragrant, ornate blossoms are produced on a vigorous but compact vine with unique leathery, somewhat droopy leaves. This vine will bloom in waves throughout the year.

We find that while Passiflora sidifolia grows happily during our summer heat, it does not typically bloom in extremely hot weather. However, it does bloom well in cool weather and is quite cold tolerant. Our vine blooms happily even in November when most flowers are gone, and temperature are dipping down near freezing overnight. We find the vine to be easy to grow, but not as free flowering as some of the hybrids. We have never had this vine produce fruit, but it is capable of setting edible fruit if pollinated.

Passiflora sidifolia is also sometimes incorrectly called Passiflora sidaefolia, and Passiflora sidiifolia.

Passiflora serrulata

Passiflora serrulata has very unique greenish and purple flowers surrounded by large papery bracts that resemble lanterns before the buds open. These flowers are held dangling below a vigorous, sturdy vine with oval leaves. Passiflora serrulata is a large vigorous vine, and due to the way the flowers are held it lends itself well to being planted on a pergola or other large support structure that allows viewing the plant from below. In addition to the gorgeous flowers, it will produce edible fruit if pollinated by another vine. If you wish to grow fruit a different P. serrulata strain would be the best choice for a pollination partner.

Passiflora serrulata is a species native to Columbia and Venezuela, and likes warm temperatures. It typically flowers mid-late summer for us. It can be a bit tricky to grow, so is best for a more experienced grower. Nonetheless, it is worth growing for its unique flowers and tasty fruits.

It means that this Passiflora is not cold tolerant and requires protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, bring it inside once temperatures start regularly dipping below 50 degrees. Freezing temperatures will kill it.

Clear Sky:

Clear Sky is a hybrid vine that produces truly spectacular flowers that can be up to 5″ across. It’s flowers have white petals with purple, white and blue striped filaments. Plus it has such attractive, glossy, dark green leaves, that it makes a great plant to have around even when it isn’t flowering.

We find Clear Sky to be a well mannered plant that is easily maintained to a manageable size. This makes more accessible to gardeners with limited space, and it is an ideal plant for both growing in a container or planting in the ground.

Maximize your blooms by planting this vine in full sun. However it will also tolerate some shade at the expense of fewer blooms.

Betty Myles Young:

This hybrid sports enormous blueish-purple flowers in abundance from spring to frost. This is a large, free-flowering, undemanding vine with attractive, dark, glossy leaves and purplish stems. Due to its size and vigor this vine is ideally planted in the ground somewhere it has space to spread. However, if you live in a cold climate and provide it with a large container it will perform just as well for you as if it was planted in the ground. Plus it is sterile which means that it won’t make a mess dropping fruit if you keep it in a pot on your patio.

Maximize your blooms by planting this vine in full sun. However it will also tolerate some shade at the expense of fewer blooms.

Blue Eyed Susan:

Blue Eyed Susan displays huge, fragrant, deep purple flowers topped with dozens of long wavy filaments that almost completely obscure the petals. Easy to grow, vigorous vine produces flowers all year long. This vine has coarse textured, attractive semi-glossy foliage. While it can be a large vine, it is not overly aggressive, and it performs well grown in containers. It also responds well to pruning. Following the blossoms medium sized speckled fruit may appear. The fruit is edible and is similar to maypop fruit (Passiflora incarnata).

Are you interested in growing Passion Flowers for fruit? Then this bundle is for you. Unlike most of our bundles that are focused on getting you a color selection, this one is focused on getting you fruit. For this reason, these 2 Passiflora varieties have almost identical looking flowers. However, they are genetically different so that they can effectively pollinate each other, and both are capable of setting edible fruit.

These vines will produce delicious juicy tropical fruits like you can purchase at the store. Passion fruit vines are very tropical, and those living in warm climates have the best chances of producing ripe fruit. Northern gardeners trying to grow fruit should be prepared to bring the large vines inside as fruit will not be able to set and ripen before frost. While one Passiflora edulis may set fruit without a pollinator, a 2nd plant increases your chances of success. This collection includes 2 similar looking, but genetically different edulis varieties. Edulis:

Passiflora edulis is the purple passion flower grown commercially for fruit. However that is not its only value. The large, fancy blooms boast white petals with a purple center and long wavy filaments. These massive blooms accent glossy green foliage making it an excellent choice for its ornamental value. Thus it would make it an excellent option if you are interested in edible landscaping.

This is a large attractive vine that is best grown planted in the ground. It can be planted in a pot, and it will grow well, but it may be hard to manage its size. You may also have difficulty getting it to flower in a container.

Many people wish to grow this vine for its fruit. If doing so, it is best to grow it with a second vine to pollinate it. Although it may set fruit without a pollinator, it will produce best if pollinated by another variety. Furthermore, to successfully get ripe fruit you will need a long growing season or the ability to bring the plant inside. The fruit takes a long time to mature and ripen. Because of this, in the majority of climate zones it will not have time to flower and ripen fruit before fall frost. When ripe, the fruit is aromatic and purple.

You should plant this vine in full sun. If you do not plant it in full sun it will not bloom or set fruit.

Big Red Jack:

Large coarse vine with glossy lobed leaves that produces large white flowers that have dark purple centers and long frilly filaments. We grow this vine for its wonderful ornamental characteristics as it is more compact and blooms more readily than our Passiflora edulis. In addition to having abundant, beautiful flowers, this vine is a selection of the species commonly grown for fruit and produces large edible fruits if pollinated. In colder climates the fruit will not ripen before frost and the vine will need to be brought inside to ripen the fruit.

Plant this vine in full sun or you will not get flowers. You can grow this vine in a container in cold climates, and it will bloom. However, due to its large size and tropical nature, it does best planted in the ground if your climate will allow it.

Incense:

This is one of the most popular and hardiest Passiflora hybrids available. Incense produces whimsical 3-4” purple flowers with long wavy purple filaments all summer long. In addition to the flowers, this vine boasts very attractive leaves that are unbothered by most insects. The leaves make excellent food for fritillary butterfly larvae if you are seeking a highly ornamental vine for your butterfly garden.

As is common with most cold hardy passion flowers, this vine suckers readily. This means that it will re-sprout from the roots if frozen back to the ground. Due to this suckering habit, it may also pop up in other places in your garden. Because of this suckering characteristic, and due to its large size, this vine is best planted in the ground somewhere that it will have plenty of space to grow. However, this vine also performs well in a container for those who are located in climates too cold for outdoor planting.

You should definitely plant this vine in the sunniest location you have. If it is shaded it will not bloom at all.

Small to medium light purple blooms are produced in abundance all summer long. Despite not having flowers as big as some other varieties, incarnata more than makes up for it with volume. In addition, this is one of the easiest vines to grow, as it will reward you for your neglect with flowers, lots of flowers. If pollinated, the flowers are followed with small fruits you can eat. Best of all, it is a native plant that is pollinator and wildlife friendly. You will likely find, that this vine is a magnet for both pollinators and fritillary butterfly larvae.

Passiflora ‘Blue Velvet’

All summer long this attractive vine produces 4+” deep purple flowers topped with copious amounts of eccentric purple filaments. The flowers on this heat tolerant vine sit atop attractive, deep green leaves, and these leaves look great even without flowers. Plus, if you have a butterfly garden, Passiflora ‘Blue Velvet’ make great food for fritillary larvae.

Blue Velvet is a new remake of one of the most popular, and hardiest Passiflora hybrids available (Passiflora Incense). In our opinion, Blue Velvet is superior to the tried and true favorite Incense. As you might expect, the plants are quite similar, and without flowers we have trouble telling them apart. You will find that in terms of growth habits and size characteristics they are virtually identical. But, Blue Velvet produces larger flowers that are a darker/richer purple than Incense. Additionally, it produces way, way more blooms than Incense does.

We have had great success growing this vine in a 3-5 gallon pot, and we find it flowers readily and plentifully. So, container growing this vine is a great option if you want to grow it a cold climate, or if you wish to control its size and spread. But, if you want to get the most out of it, you should plant it in the ground somewhere it has space to sprawl. In fact, while a bit of an unconventional use, it makes a fantastic flowering ground cover.

As is common with cold hardy passion flowers, this vine suckers readily from the roots. This means that it will re-sprout from the roots if frozen back to the ground. It also means that in the spring it may sprout up in other places in your garden. Despite this habit, we find it easy to contain by mowing or pulling out the unwanted suckers.

You should definitely plant this vine in the most sunny location you have, otherwise the number of blooms will be much reduced.

Streptocarpella Concord Blue

Streptocarpella or Cape Primrose is a much less fussy cousin to the much loved African Violet. It constantly produces an abundance of blooms on long wiry stems. It has small fuzzy leaves and a trailing habit that makes it wonderful as a house plant or a shady container garden. Given appropriate conditions they will flower constantly whether kept indoors or out. Unlike African Violets, Streptocarpella are quite tolerant of a variety of temperatures and perform fabulously outdoors in a shaded location. They are the perfect alternative to boring old impatiens for a shady patio corner. Try mixing the white and blue together in the same pot for a dazzling display.
