Abutilon ‘Pumpkin Spice’

Pumpkin Spice is our newest Abutilon variety, being released in 2026. It is a variety that was bred right here at Snowdrop Farm! This Abutilon is a unique, gorgeous light orange color. Pumpkin spice is a seedling off of Abutilon ‘Blushing Belle’. It has a flowering and growth habit virtually identical to Blushing Belle or Red Glory. It is a dwarf plant with a slightly weeping habit due to the weight of all the blossoms. The plant is covered in large, open, downward facing blossoms year round. Pumpkin Spice grows to about 2′ tall, but can be kept smaller with pruning.

Abutilons as a group are interesting in that flower color can sometimes significantly intensify or change in cooler weather. Pumpkin Spice is certainly a good example of that trait! If kept in cool temperatures over the winter the flower color becomes more intense and deepens more towards a pinkish-orange. The photos of the whole plant were taken during warmer weather. The two photos that are close ups of the flowers were taken during the winter when temperatures were maintained about 50 degrees. We happen to love both versions of this plant.

Abutilon is an evergreen perennial in warm climates, and can be easily grown as an outdoor annual or a houseplant in colder climates. It isn’t picky about its environment as long as it receives plenty of water and bright light. It is suited for both container culture or planting in the ground, and will happily bloom on your windowsill or outside on your patio. Abutilons respond well to pruning. Flower buds are produced on new growth, so they can be easily be shaped and maintained to size with regular trimming.

Because of its leaf and flower shape, Abutilon is known by many different names, they include flowering maple, parlor maple, Indian mallow, Chinese bellflower, and Chinese Lantern.

You will receive 1 Abutilon starter plant in 2.5″ pot for each item added to the cart. An example of starter plants is included in the photos. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

What does hardiness zone 9 mean?

It means that Abutilon are not cold tolerant and require protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing them outdoors, bring them inside before it starts frosting. While they will tolerate a light frost, continual cold temperatures will kill them.

Abutilon ‘Victor Reiter’

Victor Reiter has the largest flowers of any Abutilon we grow! The flowers are 2.5-3″ wide and are a delightfully cheerful light orange color. The flowers hang gracefully from the branches. This is a heavily blooming variety that will provide you with plenty of flowers from spring to frost. We find that plants overwintered in our greenhouse continue to bloom all winter.

Unlike many of the Abutilons we grow, Victor Reiter is NOT a dwarf variety. It is capable of getting 6′ or more tall and 4′ wide. However, like most Abutilons it responds well to pruning and can be kept to a smaller size quite easily. As with most Abutilons, Victor Reiter will stay looking its best if it is pruned periodically to help it to maintain a desirable shape.

Abutilon ‘Red Tiger’

Red Tiger has some of the most mesmerizing flowers we have seen. This Abutilon has large yellow blooms with rich red veins hanging on long pedicels. This allows the blooms to move freely, and they will sway in the breeze like a bunch of delicate lanterns. The blossoms provide a spectacular experience whether viewed from the side or below making it a truly remarkable plant to add to your garden. Red Tiger is capable of blossoming almost year round if kept in the right environment.

Unlike many of the Abutilons we grow, Red tiger is NOT a dwarf variety. It is capable of getting 4-5′ or more tall and wide. However, like most Abutilons it responds well to pruning and can be kept to a smaller size quite easily.

Abutilon ‘Star Sprite’

Star Sprite is a little different than most of the other Abutilons we grow. Star Sprite is an Abutilon megapotamicum hybrid. And thus, it has a more trailing growth habit and downward facing, dangling blooms. Star Sprite would make a good hanging basket. It also has a somewhat unique flower shape. The flowers are smaller and more Chinese lantern shaped rather than the large open bell shape of most of our Abutilon varieties. They have red centers and yellow orange petals with darker orange veins and a bright red calyx surrounding them. Depending on environmental factors, the flowers range from a very deep red-orange to a lighter yellowish orange. This makes for a really stunning floral display.

Star Sprite is easy to care for, ever blooming and quite cold tolerant. It is a dwarf plant that will stay small and maintain a nice tight compact form without a lot of pruning. It can be grown as a hanging basket or standard form, and could make an excellent addition to mixed containers.

Abutilon ‘Blushing Moonlight’

Abutilon are a huge group of plants which comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Blushing Moonlight has soft slightly fuzzy leaves, and is covered with dozens of large peach to light pink bell shaped blooms. The flowers have a red center. Blushing Moonlight is extremely generous with its blooms, and will flower non-stop, even in the dreary winter months making it a perfect houseplant.

This particular Abutilon has a very upright growth habit, and we would consider it to be a semi-dwarf variety. It is easy to maintain as a small compact plant with regular pruning, and will grow 2-3′ tall if left un-pruned.
