Passiflora sidifolia is a species from Brazil that has medium sized pendulous flowers with white petals and reddish-purple striped filaments. These fragrant, ornate blossoms are produced on a vigorous but compact vine with unique leathery, somewhat droopy leaves. This vine will bloom in waves throughout the year.

We find that while Passiflora sidifolia grows happily during our summer heat, it does not typically bloom in extremely hot weather. However, it does bloom well in cool weather and is quite cold tolerant. Our vine blooms happily even in November when most flowers are gone, and temperature are dipping down near freezing overnight. We find the vine to be easy to grow, but not as free flowering as some of the hybrids. We have never had this vine produce fruit, but it is capable of setting edible fruit if pollinated.

Passiflora sidifolia is also sometimes incorrectly called Passiflora sidaefolia, and Passiflora sidiifolia.

For each item added to cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

Hardiness Zone: 9

What does hardiness zone 9 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is not cold tolerant and requires protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, bring it inside once temperatures start to get to around 32 degrees. While it can tolerate a very light frost, freezing temperatures will kill it.

Very unique, greenish, fragrant flowers that burst out of lantern shaped buds on a vigorous, sturdy vine. Produce delicious, edible fruit if pollinated.

Passiflora serrulata has very unique greenish and purple flowers surrounded by large papery bracts that resemble lanterns before the buds open. These flowers are held dangling below a vigorous, sturdy vine with oval leaves. Passiflora serrulata is a large vigorous vine, and due to the way the flowers are held it lends itself well to being planted on a pergola or other large support structure that allows viewing the plant from below. In addition to the gorgeous flowers, it will produce edible fruit if pollinated by another vine. If you wish to grow fruit a different P. serrulata strain would be the best choice for a pollination partner.

Passiflora serrulata is a species native to Columbia and Venezuela, and likes warm temperatures. It typically flowers mid-late summer for us. It can be a bit tricky to grow, so is best for a more experienced grower. Nonetheless, it is worth growing for its unique flowers and tasty fruits.

If you love huge flowers in bright colors, than this collection is for you. These Passiflora varieties can produce blossoms that are 5″ across. These enormous flowers sit atop vigorous free flowering vines. This collection includes 3 popular sun and heat loving varieties of complementary colors that are easy to grow. The starter plants in this bundle include 1 Clear Sky, and 1 Betty Myles Young, and 1 Blue Eyed Susan. Descriptions of the individual varieties are below.

Each item added to cart will include a 3 pack of 2.5″ pots.

A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

Included Variety Descriptions:

Clear Sky:

Clear Sky is a hybrid vine that produces truly spectacular flowers that can be up to 5″ across. It’s flowers have white petals with purple, white and blue striped filaments. Plus it has such attractive, glossy, dark green leaves, that it makes a great plant to have around even when it isn’t flowering.

We find Clear Sky to be a well mannered plant that is easily maintained to a manageable size. This makes more accessible to gardeners with limited space, and it is an ideal plant for both growing in a container or planting in the ground.

Maximize your blooms by planting this vine in full sun. However it will also tolerate some shade at the expense of fewer blooms.

Betty Myles Young:

This hybrid sports enormous blueish-purple flowers in abundance from spring to frost. This is a large, free-flowering, undemanding vine with attractive, dark, glossy leaves and purplish stems. Due to its size and vigor this vine is ideally planted in the ground somewhere it has space to spread. However, if you live in a cold climate and provide it with a large container it will perform just as well for you as if it was planted in the ground. Plus it is sterile which means that it won’t make a mess dropping fruit if you keep it in a pot on your patio.

Maximize your blooms by planting this vine in full sun. However it will also tolerate some shade at the expense of fewer blooms.

Blue Eyed Susan:

Blue Eyed Susan displays huge, fragrant, deep purple flowers topped with dozens of long wavy filaments that almost completely obscure the petals. Easy to grow, vigorous vine produces flowers all year long. This vine has coarse textured, attractive semi-glossy foliage. While it can be a large vine, it is not overly aggressive, and it performs well grown in containers. It also responds well to pruning. Following the blossoms medium sized speckled fruit may appear. The fruit is edible and is similar to maypop fruit (Passiflora incarnata).

Plant in full sun as this vine likes heat and sun.

Streptocarpella or Cape Primrose is a much less fussy cousin to the much loved African Violet. It constantly produces an abundance of blooms on long wiry stems. It has small fuzzy leaves and a trailing habit that makes it wonderful as a house plant or a shady container garden. Unlike African Violets, Streptocarpella are quite tolerant of a variety of temperatures and perform fabulously outdoors in a shaded location. They are the perfect alternative to boring old impatiens for a shady patio corner. Try mixing the white and blue together in the same pot for a dazzling display.

This discount bundle includes 1 white and 1 blue Streptocarpella starter plant in 2.5″ pots. An example of starter plants is included in the photos. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

Passiflora caerulea, the Blue Crown Passion Flower. As you may know, it is named for its white petals adorned by a crown of pretty blue filaments. Bahama Blue is a selection chosen for its abundance of blooms. In fact, this evergreen vine will grace you with exotic blooms year round. Plus, this is an easy to grow, care free vine. It is very vigorous, and grows into a large vine if given space to spread out. Fortunately for norther growers, it also responds well to pruning and is easy to keep in a large container.

This plant is fairly cold tolerant and like most cold hardy Passiflora, it will re-sprout from the roots if the top gets frozen back. Additionally, suckers may also pop up in other places where the roots have traveled.

The flowers are nectar rich, and loved by pollinators. Because pollinators love it, inedible fruits will likely follow pollination. As a bonus, its finely dissected foliage makes good food for butterfly larva.

You should plant this vine in full sun. It will tolerate some light partial shade, but blooming may stop or be reduced.

Passiflora ‘Silvie’ produces very pleasantly fragrant show stopping blooms. That means you will want to make sure to plant this one somewhere that you can enjoy the delicate fragrance. This is not the only desirable characteristic it possesses though. This cold hardy vine produces medium to large sized purple-blue blooms. Purple filaments that abruptly turn deep maroon near the center adorn this plant’s flowers. It is a delicate looking, but large, vigorous vine with deep green lobed leaves. Blooms profusely all summer long, and may keep blooming into winter if kept warm enough. This vine makes a good choice for both in ground or container planting as it is easy to prune to maintain its size.

To get the most out if this vine, you should plant it in full sun and give it plenty of water during the growing season.

This easy to grow vine produces an abundance of blueish-purple 3" flowers. Remarkably cold hardy, reliable vine that will complement your garden all season.

The post Passiflora ‘Blue Bouquet’ first appeared on Snowdrop Farm.

An abundance of blueish-purple 3″ flowers, grace this large, free-flowering vine. Passiflora ‘Blue Bouquet’ often produces blossoms in pairs. This easy to grow vine has dark green, non-glossy leaves and will easily cover a fence or wall in a season. It is a very large, vigorous vine which suckers from the roots, so would be best planted somewhere it can sprawl. Blue Bouquet is tolerant of heat and will bloom from spring to frost opening dozens of blossoms every day. While this plant often gets overlooked by customers as it doesn’t have flowers that are as flashy as some other varieties, in our opinion it more than makes up for it by being very reliable. It is more spectacular in person than the photos may lead on, and it isn’t likely to disappoint you in the garden.

This plant is not picky about conditions though it does best in full sun. It will still bloom well if it gets some afternoon shade. As an added bonus we have found it to be quite cold hardy, and it has reliably come back year after year in our zone 8 garden.

For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

For those interested, Passiflora ‘Blue Bouquet’ is [(P. amethystina x P. caerulea) x (P. amethystina x P. caerulea)] x P. caerulea, and is Rick McCain’s hybrid.

What does hardiness zone 8b mean?

It means that this Passiflora is somewhat cold tolerant and does not require protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it planted outdoors, it can survive temperatures down to about 15 degrees. The top will be killed to the ground, but it should re-sprout from the roots. It requires a well drained location, and would benefit from a protective winter mulch. If grown in a container, it will need to have the roots protected from freezing temperatures.

Clear Sky produces large white and blue flowers up to 5" across. It is like the common Blue Passion Flower (Passifora caerulea) only with much larger flowers.

Passiflora ‘Clear Sky’ is a hybrid vine that produces truly spectacular flowers that can be up to 5″ across. It’s flowers have white petals with purple, white and blue striped filaments. Plus it has such attractive, glossy, dark green leaves, that it makes a great plant to have around even when it isn’t flowering.

If you like the Common Blue Passion Flower, you will LOVE Clear Sky. This is because the flowers of Passiflora ‘Clear Sky’ will dwarf the flowers of Passiflora caerulea. Additionally, while many sources state that it is larger and more vigorous than the Blue Passion flower, in our experience that is just not the case.

For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page.
