Looking to grow a cold hardy passion flower for fruit? This bargain bundle is great choice for those in colder climates. It includes 2 different Passiflora incarnata cultivars. Passiflora incarnata is the most cold hardy Passion Flower variety we grow. It grows and flowers profusely even in colder climates adding a touch of exotic flare to any garden. In fact, it will even produce edible fruit in northern climates. Best of all, it is a native plant that is pollinator and wildlife friendly. You will likely find, that this vine is a magnet for both pollinators and fritillary butterfly larvae.

Incarnata vines are easy to grow, and bloom generously throughout the summer. Incarnata will produce copious quantities of small tasty fruit if pollinated. However, Passion Flowers do not generally self-pollinate. This bundle contains two genetically different plant which ensures that you will be able to get fruit. The starter plants in this bundle include 1 Passiflora incarnata, and 1 Passiflora incarnata ‘Alba’.

When it gets frozen in the fall, it dies back to the ground and reappears in May resulting in its common name ‘maypop’. Also, it will sucker from the roots and spread sending up new stems where the roots have run to. You can control its spread by simply pulling or cutting down the unwanted sprouts.

You should plant it in full sun and provide it with plenty of water during the growing season to get the most flowers. However, to successfully overwinter this vine, it will need to be located in a well drained spot.

Each item added to cart will include a 2 pack of 2.5″ pots.

A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

Hardiness Zone: 6

What does hardiness zone 6 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is cold tolerant and does not require protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, it can survive temperatures down to about 0 degrees as long as it is in a well drained spot. The top will be killed to the ground, but it should re-sprout from the roots. Additionally, in colder areas, it would benefit from a protective winter mulch. If grown in a container, it will need to have the roots protected from freezing temperatures.

The plant known as the Maypop in white. This plant with pure white, exotic looking blooms is the most cold hardy Passion Flower available.

Passiflora incarnata ‘Alba’, the cold hardiest of all passion flowers, in pure white. So, if you want an exotic, tropical looking plant, but you don’t live somewhere hot, this is the vine for you. It grows and flowers profusely even in colder climates adding a touch of exotic flare to any garden. In fact, it will even produce edible fruit in northern climates. Alba is the perfect pollination partner for our purple Passiflora incarnata if you are looking to maximize the amount of fruit you get from 2 vines.

Small to medium pure white blooms are produced in abundance all summer long. Despite not having flowers as big as some other varieties, Passiflora incarnata more than makes up for it with volume. In addition, this is one of the easiest vines to grow, as it will reward you for your neglect with flowers, lots of flowers. If pollinated, the flowers are followed with small fruits you can eat. Best of all, it is a native plant that is pollinator and wildlife friendly. You will likely find, that this vine is a magnet for both pollinators and fritillary butterfly larvae.

Large, bright pink flowers with a rich red center grace this easy to grow vine. Free flowering heat and cold tolerant plant.

The post Passiflora ‘Miri’ first appeared on Snowdrop Farm.

Passiflora ‘Miri’ is a brand new, more heat tolerant pink hybrid. The flowers are bright pink with a deeper almost red center. The look very similar to Passiflora ‘Anastasia’ although the blooms are not quite as large. If you live in a hot location and want Anastasia’s pink blooms, Miri would likely be a better choice. While Miri still doesn’t thrive in extreme heat, it definitely seems to perform better than Anastasia who sometimes struggles to survive our summers.

Miri is an easy to grow fairly free flowering cultivar. The vigorous vine boasts deeply lobed, attractive, medium green leaves. Additionally it is quite cold tolerant. As this variety is quite new to us, we have not verified this. However, it is purported to be capable of surviving temperatures down to 20 degrees or below. We would not recommend exposing it to temperatures that cold for an extended period of time.

In most places you should plant it in full sun. However, in very hot climates give it some afternoon shade.

For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

For those interested Passiflora ‘Miri’ is Shawn Mattison’s hybrid, but parentage is unstated.

Hardiness Zone: 9

What does hardiness zone 9 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is not cold tolerant and requires protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, bring it inside once it starts to freeze. This variety will tolerate temperatures down to freezing. Prolonged cold temperatures will kill it.

Need a cold hardy Passion Flower, but can’t decide which one? This bargain bundle is great choice for those in colder climates. It includes 2 of the most cold hardy Passion Flower varieties we grow. These popular varieties are easy to grow, and bloom generously throughout the summer. Additionally, you will likely even get some maypop fruit. The starter plants in this bundle include 1 Passiflora Incense, and 1 Passiflora incarnata. Descriptions of the individual varieties are below.

Each item added to cart will include a 2 pack of 2.5″ pots.

A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

Included Variety Descriptions:

Incense:

This is one of the most popular and hardiest Passiflora hybrids available. Incense produces whimsical 3-4” purple flowers with long wavy purple filaments all summer long. In addition to the flowers, this vine boasts very attractive leaves that are unbothered by most insects. The leaves make excellent food for fritillary butterfly larvae if you are seeking a highly ornamental vine for your butterfly garden.

As is common with most cold hardy passion flowers, this vine suckers readily. This means that it will re-sprout from the roots if frozen back to the ground. Due to this suckering habit, it may also pop up in other places in your garden. Because of this suckering characteristic, and due to its large size, this vine is best planted in the ground somewhere that it will have plenty of space to grow. However, this vine also performs well in a container for those who are located in climates too cold for outdoor planting.

You should definitely plant this vine in the sunniest location you have. If it is shaded it will not bloom at all.

Hardiness Zone: 7

What does hardiness zone 7 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is cold tolerant and does not require protection from freezing temperatures. Additionally, in colder areas, it would benefit from a protective winter mulch. If grown in a container, it will need to have the roots protected from freezing temperatures.

Incarnata:

The hardiest of all passion flowers. It grows and flowers profusely even in colder climates adding a touch of exotic flare to any garden. In fact, it will even produce edible fruit in northern climates.

Small to medium light purple blooms are produced in abundance all summer long. Despite not having flowers as big as some other varieties, incarnata more than makes up for it with volume.

Modern remake of Passiflora Incense. This improved vine is vigorous, free-flowering and cold hardy vine with whimsical deep purple flowers.

The post Passiflora ‘Blue Velvet’ first appeared on Snowdrop Farm.

All summer long this attractive vine produces 4+” deep purple flowers topped with copious amounts of eccentric purple filaments. The flowers on this heat tolerant vine sit atop attractive, deep green leaves, and these leaves look great even without flowers. Plus, if you have a butterfly garden, Passiflora ‘Blue Velvet’ make great food for fritillary larvae.

Blue Velvet is a new remake of one of the most popular, and hardiest Passiflora hybrids available (Passiflora Incense). In our opinion, Blue Velvet is superior to the tried and true favorite Incense. As you might expect, the plants are quite similar, and without flowers we have trouble telling them apart. You will find that in terms of growth habits and size characteristics they are virtually identical. But, Blue Velvet produces larger flowers that are a darker/richer purple than Incense. Additionally, it produces way, way more blooms than Incense does.

We have had great success growing this vine in a 3-5 gallon pot, and we find it flowers readily and plentifully. So, container growing this vine is a great option if you want to grow it a cold climate, or if you wish to control its size and spread. But, if you want to get the most out of it, you should plant it in the ground somewhere it has space to sprawl. In fact, while a bit of an unconventional use, it makes a fantastic flowering ground cover.

As is common with cold hardy passion flowers, this vine suckers readily from the roots. This means that it will re-sprout from the roots if frozen back to the ground. It also means that in the spring it may sprout up in other places in your garden. Despite this habit, we find it easy to contain by mowing or pulling out the unwanted suckers.

You should definitely plant this vine in the most sunny location you have, otherwise the number of blooms will be much reduced.

For each item added to cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

For those interested, Passiflora ‘Blue Velvet’ is a P. cincinnata x P. incarnata selection.

Hardiness zone: 7

What does hardiness zone 7 mean?

Remake of Passiflora Incense. This vine has large, 5" dark purple blooms. One of the hardiest Passion Flowers available.

The post Passiflora ‘Inspiration’ first appeared on Snowdrop Farm.

Inspiration is a cold hardy vine with impressive 5″ wide intensely purple blooms. Copious amounts of long wavy filaments float above and dwarf the similarly colored petals of this passion flower. The vine itself has dark, glossy green multi-lobed leaves. These attractive leaves are evergreen in warm climates. They make a great fence screen, and are food for fritillary butterfly larvae.

This is a remake of the much loved Passiflora ‘Incense’. Inspiration has superior blooms, but is slightly more difficult to grow due to somewhat decreased vigor. It is definitely still well worth your while to grow, but we recommend growing it in the ground, not a container. Container grown plants do not seem to perform as well.

Evidence indicates that Inspiration may be slightly more cold hardy than Incense, and it is one of the hardiest passion flowers available.

You should definitely plant this vine in full sun to get the most flowers.

For each item added to cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

For those interested, P. Inspiration is a tetraploid selection of P. ‘Incense’ (P. cincinnata x P. incarnata).

Hardiness zone: 7

What does hardiness zone 7 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is cold tolerant and does not require protection from freezing temperatures. If you are growing it planted in the ground outdoors, it can survive temperatures down to about 10 degrees as long as it is in a well drained spot. The top will be killed to the ground, but it should re-sprout from the roots. Additionally, in colder areas, it would benefit from a protective winter mulch. If grown in a container, it will need to have the roots protected from freezing temperatures.

Passiflora caerulea, the Blue Crown Passion Flower. As you may know, it is named for its white petals adorned by a crown of pretty blue filaments. Bahama Blue is a selection chosen for its abundance of blooms. In fact, this evergreen vine will grace you with exotic blooms year round. Plus, this is an easy to grow, care free vine. It is very vigorous, and grows into a large vine if given space to spread out. Fortunately for norther growers, it also responds well to pruning and is easy to keep in a large container.

This plant is fairly cold tolerant and like most cold hardy Passiflora, it will re-sprout from the roots if the top gets frozen back. Additionally, suckers may also pop up in other places where the roots have traveled.

The flowers are nectar rich, and loved by pollinators. Because pollinators love it, inedible fruits will likely follow pollination. As a bonus, its finely dissected foliage makes good food for butterfly larva.

You should plant this vine in full sun. It will tolerate some light partial shade, but blooming may stop or be reduced.

The plant known as Maypop. This purple flowered plant with exotic looking blooms is the most cold hardy Passion Flower available.

The post Passiflora incarnata first appeared on Snowdrop Farm.

Passiflora incarnata, the cold hardiest of all passion flowers. So, if you want an exotic, tropical looking plant, but you don’t live somewhere hot, this is the vine for you. It grows and flowers profusely even in colder climates adding a touch of exotic flare to any garden. In fact, it will even produce edible fruit in northern climates.

Small to medium light purple blooms are produced in abundance all summer long.

For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page.
Hardiness Zone: 6

What does hardiness zone 6 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is cold tolerant and does not require protection from freezing temperatures.

Passiflora ‘Fata Confetto’s flowers are somewhat reminiscent of the common maypop’s blooms. However, they are much larger, and much more showy. When this plant gets blooming, there will be so many flowers open that they might almost hide the foliage. The flowers are huge, typically 4+ inches across, and are a pleasant light purple that matches every garden. Each flower has so many long, striped, wavy filaments that the petals are practically invisible. They will add a unique sense of whimsy to any garden. Plus they very easy to grow and are quite cold hardy making them accessible to many gardeners. They are well mannered plants, and if frozen to the ground they will re-sprout from the roots.

You should plant it in full sun if you want to maximize blooms (and who doesn’t?). Then let it sprawl all over the ground to make a cheerful ground cover or train it up a trellis.

If you are looking for an easy care, true red Passion Flower, then look no further! Lady Margaret is by far one of the best, truest, most free-flowering reds available. Other reds we have grown just don’t stack up against Passiflora ‘Lady Margaret’.

This is an attractive, small vine with slightly pubescent 3 lobed lime green leaves. The leaves are punctuated by medium sized crimson red flowers with white centers. Freely blooms all year long. This incredible vine is unfazed by hot humid summers and cool winters. It is very easy to grow and suitable for containers due to its small size, and it may even bloom inside if kept in a sunny enough window over the winter.

This is definitely a plant that you should place in full sun. Additionally you need to make sure that it is in a well drained location and that you don’t over water it while young. In our opinion, Lady Margaret’s one flaw is that it is a bit more susceptible to root rot than many other varieties. However this only becomes a problem if it is planted in an inappropriate location.

As an added bonus, in our experience this plant is much more cold hardy than many sources lead you to believe. While you’re experiences may vary from ours, we have had it come back from the roots for several years in our zone 8 garden.

For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

For those interested, Passiflora ‘Lady Margaret’ is P. miniata ( formerly P. coccinea) x P. incarnata alba. Tim Skimina’s hybrid.

Hardiness Zone: 9 (maybe 8)

What does hardiness zone 9 mean?

It means that this Passiflora is not as cold tolerant as some. Most sources list it as being killed by freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, bring it inside once it starts to freeze. This variety will tolerate temperatures down to freezing. Prolonged cold temperatures will kill it.

What does maybe zone 8 mean?

It means our experience indicates that it may be more hardy than previously thought. It has overwintered in our zone 8 garden for several years. If you have a sheltered spot you can plant it in the ground in zone 8 its worth giving it a try. However, if you are keeping it in a pot you will need to protect it from freezing temperatures.

Or you can check out our other Cold Hardy Passiflora for more cold tolerant selections.

Looking to grow Passiflora for fritillary butterfly larvae?

Lady Margaret is a toss up, though we do see caterpillars feeding on it here. It is a cross between Passiflora incarnata which is one of their favorite foods, and Passiflora miniata which is not usually considered good for the caterpillars.
